Regulatory Announcements
05 February 1998
John Menzies plc today announced that Concorde Express, part of Menzies Transport Services division (MTS), has won a £4.5 million contract to handle all Heathrow cargo for the Scandinavian Airline SAS for the next three years. The announcement reinforces John Menzies' plans to concentrate on its distribution businesses.
The SAS contract win for Concorde is particularly significant because of the Airline's membership of the STAR Alliance, a world-wide partnership including Lufthansa, Air Canada, United Airlines, Thai and Varig. MTS already has a close relationship with Lufthansa with whom they are currently in advanced negotiations to set up a joint company, the London Cargo Centre Ltd, to run the German airline's cargo terminal at Heathrow.
Commenting on the contract win, David Mackay, Chief Executive of John Menzies, said:
"This is excellent news for Menzies Transport Services. SAS is a very significant customer at Heathrow with 8,000 flight turnarounds every year. It demonstrates our commitment as a group to expand our distribution businesses, in particular into other fast growing transport services industry. We look forward to working closely with SAS in the years ahead."
