STOCK EXCHANGE RE-CLASSIFY JOHN MENZIES PLC AS DISTRIBUTOR

The past year has seen an increasing focus by your Board on the Group's Distribution Services businesses, which in the last financial year accounted for 69% of sales and 86% of operating profits. Although retailing is an important part of the Group, our distribution businesses will continue to be the major influence on our performance. Reflecting this, we recently asked the FT-SE Actuaries Industry Classification Committee to transfer the Group's share price listing from the "Retailers, General" to the "Distributors" sector.
The Committee has today agreed with this proposal, and has now confirmed that with effect from 2nd January 1998 John Menzies plc will be listed under "Distributors".
